One of the best parts about being engaged is taste testing.
Being able to sample awesome shrimp and crab appetizers, cherry-filled chicken, tiramisu... Needless to say, it was heavenly. And quite costly. Part of me couldn't help but want to ask if the cook knew how to make cheese zombies...
One of the worst parts about having the Korean channel? All of the gut-busting hilarious shows are on at 3 a.m. I stayed up until 4 a.m. watching Phillies pitcher Chan Ho Park strut his fine frame around South Korea. Sure, he drop-kicked another player... But you don't mess with people who know Taekwondo.
Just like any other country, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Unfortunately, everyone in Korea is under a telescopic lens, making their so-called flaws that much more visible.
While there are plenty of things I love about my home country, there are a lot that I don't necessarily understand. Such as this impossible beauty standard. The thing about Koreans, is if you're not born with it, you can always get it later. For example: Blepharoplasty, the procedure to get a double eyelid.
Mr. Big and I have a hard time watching shows on KBS and Arirang (Korean TV channels). A lot of the times, if you're not supermodel thin and ghostly pale, you'd better become a comedian or stick with a desk job. Otherwise, if you're in the spotlight, expect to be made fun of, hardcore.
While most of us can't afford (literally) to look like any of the Wondergirls (right), some of us might be able to look like the spandex men in the new Seo Taiji music video. They have their very own side video for you netizens, which is really creepy, until you realize it's all done in one take, which is pretty amazing.
A friend in college introduced me to Taiji's music. I brushed it off as a Korean grunge wannabe. However, Taiji is still around and even created an alternative concert that brings over the likes of Korn, Hoobastank and Marilyn Manson. While Taiji isn't doing rap or hard rock anymore, he is still a favorite in Korea, performing more electronic pop.
One favorite that is coming to town in March is Erin McCarley. The Red Room has booked her, along with several other artists for a spectacular show that you definitely don't want to miss. McCarley oozes charisma throughout her songs and the chance to hear her live before she becomes the size of Pluto is reason enough to start clearing your schedule.
