The 47th running of the Pasco Invitational is Saturday, and while fewer schools than in years past will be at Edgar Brown Stadium, more athletes will compete than a year ago.
Because of when spring break fell on the calendar, the Invite is a week later than when meet director John Crawford would have liked.
As a result, it conflicts with several big westside meets -- the Eason, Bellevue and South Kitsap invites -- that will keep some traditional participants home.
With schools such as Everett, Snohomish and South Kitsap not coming, only 100 schools will converge on Edgar Brown this weekend, but 1,415 athletes will take part -- 40 more than a year ago.
Twelve state leaders are scheduled to take part Saturday, including three Mid-Columbians -- Richland's Galia Deitz (girls 100-meter hurdles) and Jessica Christian (girls pole vault), and Othello's Courtney Kirkwood (girls javelin).
The first races, the distance medleys, start at 9:30 a.m. Field events kick off at 10 a.m., while the finals in all other running events begin at 1 p.m.
Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for students and senior citizens.
-- While the majority of area schools are coming to Pasco, a few will take part in other invitationals Saturday.
Wahluke is holding its Windbreaker Invite that will include River View, Royal and Columbia (Burbank), while Hermiston is headed to the Aloha Relays.
