Theoret wins heat 3B to get into final

Jean Theoret easily outran Chris Bertram to get a victory in heat 3B of Columbia Cup preliminary action. The victory assured Theoret's U-37 Beacon Plumbing team of a spot in the final heat.

"It went well," Theoret said. "Other boats on the course had problems hitting each other and got called. But we had a good start on the inside lane and it was pretty much over right there."

J Michael Kelly got a one-lap penalty in the U-13 Spirit of Detroit for a lane encroachment before the start when Chris Bertram eased in between Kelly and Theoret with the U-9 Conover Insurance, and Kelly bumped into him. Neither boat was seriously damaged, and Kelly eventually went dead with a motor hot section failure.

That left Bertram all alone in second, where he finished a good half a lap behind Theoret.

"We got tangled up with the (U-13). I took the lane away from him before the start, and I don't think he liked that," Bertram said. "So he bumped into me. I don't know if it was intentional. It's not what you want, but it happens."

Bertram earned second place points for the heat, while Kelly's U-13 did not finish.

One more preliminary heat to go before the consolation heat, and then the final. Hydro Town is heating up!
