Kelly rounds out final field with connie win

J. Michael Kelly made his way into the final by outrunning a three boat field that included Brian Perkins in the U-21 Meyers Auto Tech and David Williams in the U-48 Lakeridge Paving.

Perkins led the field into the first turn, but was immediately called for jumping the gun and assessed a one-lap penalty. It didn't matter for long, though, as Kelly brought the U-13 Spirit of Detroit alongside Perkins, then throttled away for the win.

"I am in. It's not the way we wanted, but that's just the way it plays out sometimes," Kelly said. "We had some problems today, and we worked through those problems. It's all about being consistent. We didn't finish that thrid heat, so we had to run the provisional."

Kelley promised to be running down the others in the final heat, even though he will be the trailer.

The Columbia Cup final heat for 2007 will be run at 4:40 p.m.
