CBBN boys: Pasco stays alive; Richland falls in OT

By Jack Millikin, Herald staff writer

PASCO -- Anthony Scales continued his offensive assault on opposing CBBN teams Tuesday, scoring a career-high 28 points to lead Pasco to a 93-68 win over Moses Lake in a loser-out 4A CBBN district matchup in Pasco.

The senior guard, who has averaged 18.7 points over his last six games, hit 10 of 14 shots to lead a Bulldogs offense that shot 36-of-70 (51 percent) to end the Chiefs' season.

"Being a senior, I wanted a couple more games with these guys," Scales said. "I couldn't possibly have done this without my teammates."

Pasco, which clinched a 4A regional berth, will travel to Wenatchee on Friday at 7:30 p.m. to determine seeding.

The loss also marked the final game for Moses Lake senior Josh Loera, who finished with 25 points despite being relentlessly shadowed all night by Scales.

"That's a tribute to Anthony and his teammates helping out when they did," said Bulldogs coach Chad Herron. "(Loera) had 33 points in our first game and hit the game-winner in the second."

Pasco did a number on Moses Lake's 2-3 zone defense, zipping bounce passes up and down the baseline like it was Swiss cheese.

"We were extending too much. They kept beating us back door," said Chiefs coach Rolland Hansen. "Our plan was to attack the basket on offense. But we shot about seven 3s in a row and missed them all. I don't know what we were thinking there."

Moses Lake trailed the entire game but pulled to within 15-14 after Loera drove the left baseline for a bucket with just five seconds left in the first quarter. But Robert Montano came back on transition, took a pass on the right wing and banked in a 3-pointer at the buzzer for an 18-14 lead.

Montano finished with 23 points, hitting 3-of-6 from 3-point range.

The Bulldogs started the second quarter on a 6-2 run and -- after a 13-4 run to close out the frame -- took a 44-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Chiefs outscored Pasco 21-18 in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs capped the game with a 31-point fourth quarter, hitting 10 of their first 12 shots.

Against Wenatchee, a team Pasco beat 70-64 in the regular-season finale a week ago, the Bulldogs will face a much bigger team, one capable of taking advantage of them inside.

"We know no team can keep up with our speed," Montano said. "We simply have to block out and get boards."

YAKIMA -- Richland led for much of regulation before Robert Bonser hit a jump-hook with 15 seconds left to force overtime, and No. 3 Eisenhower survived in the extra period to reach the CBBN 4A district final.

Bonser scored for Ike on the opening possession of overtime, and the Cadets never trailed again.

"We had it in the bag and let it slip away," said Bombers coach Earl Streufert, whose team led by nine with 2:14 left in regulation but was just 9-of-18 at the foul line in the fourth quarter.

Richland had a chance to tie the game with 19 seconds left in overtime, but Colton McCargar made just 1 of 2 free throws.

Ike broke the press on the ensuing possession, and Bonser got a layup with a few ticks left to ice the victory.
