The road to state kicks off in earnest this weekend with district and subdistrict tournaments throughout the region.
The CBL 4A tournament is Friday and Saturday in Yakima, while the 3As are Saturday and Monday at Hanford High.
The CWAC subdistricts also run Saturday and Monday in Ellens-burg, while the SCAC district tournament starts Saturday in Sunnyside and runs all next week. The Oregon 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 4 meet is Friday and Saturday at the Tri-City Court Club.
-- The Hermiston girls successfully defended their Intermountain district title Tuesday in The Dalles, sweeping the top two doubles positions and also qualifying a singles player for next week's state tournament in Portland.
Junior Richole Berger, who teamed with older sister Rebecca to win the state doubles title a year ago, this time partnered with Alison Hawman to win the district title 6-1, 6-1 over teammates Jessica Eldrige and Hannah Wicks.
Freshman Mary Hawman took third in singles, beating Crook County's Erin Crofcheck 6-4, 6-2 in the placing match.
