CBL teams eye Inland Empire tourney

HERALD SPORTS STAFF

The Inland Empire tournament in Spokane this weekend is prompting area coaches to talk up the virtues of their rosters and the overall pride they have in being part of the CBL 3A this season.

"Our league is very impressive," Southridge girls coach Chuck Hamaker-Teals said. "(We've) got some amazing talent."

But he reserves his highest praise for the Suns' No. 1 doubles team Stephanie Hamilton and Erin Salisbury.

And rightfully so.

"Stephanie and Erin are going into the Inland Empire tournament undefeated," Hamaker-Teals said. "We're hoping on any given day that our doubles team will beat any team."

Meanwhile, Hanford coach Jim Wilson is confident that he can steer his players toward making an impact at the Inland Empire tournament.

"I'd like to get Curtis Lan a repeat of his championship in No. 2 singles," Wilson said.

He also has high hopes for his No. 1 girls doubles team, sophomores Cassandra Dicken and Becky Sharpe.

"This year they've only lost one match -- and that was today (to Southridge's Hamilton and Salisbury) -- and they should have a good tournament," he said.

Kamiakin's No. 1 boys doubles team of Andrew Chiou and Eddie Chiou put on a dominating performance Monday -- defeating their Kennewick counterparts 6-0, 6-0 -- as the Braves swept the Lions 7-0 and clinched the CBL 3A boys title.
