If area tennis fans had traded in their sunglasses for opera glasses this season, it would have been an understandable gesture as the Hanford boys sported the friendly intramural rivalry of Jake Knox and Curtis Lan, and the Kamiakin girls were led through a record-breaking season by freshman Brittney Reed ... of Liberty Christian.

Kamiakin High School opened its doors in the fall of 1970, and since that time, no girls singles player or doubles team had won a state tennis title.

VANCOUVER -- Richland's Troy Zuroske is in the 4A consolation semifinals, where he'll play Brian McPhee of Bellermine Prep.

The Kamiakin girls tennis team took a giant step toward winning some hardware Friday, advancing singles player Brittney Reed and the doubles team of Demie Warner and Ali Welch to the semifinals of the 3A state tournament at the Tri-City Court Club.

Troy Zuroske was named the boys MVP, Janell Talbot was named the girls MVP and Michelle Martin was the top coach as Richland sweep the top honors for the All-CBL 4A tennis squad.

TUALITIN -- Hermiston's Jacob Crowther defeated Andy Jursik of Cleveland in straight sets to advance through the second round of the Oregon 5A state tournament at Tualitin Hills Tennis Center.

It's going to be an exciting weekend for Kamiakin as the Braves send nine athletes to the 3A regional tennis championships in Spokane.

Troy Zuroske of Richland beat Wenatchee's Clint Vidano 7-5, 7-5 to earn the District CBL 4A boys singles championship, the team of Elliot Martin and Chris Shallman won the doubles championship.

Hanford's Jake Knox beat teammate Curtis Lan 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 for the singles championship, and the Falcons edged Kamiakin to clinch the CBL 3A boys district title.

Brittney Reed of Kamiakin won both of her singles matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores, and teammate Caitlin Bampton also reached the semifinals of the CBL 3A district tennis tournament Saturday at Hanford High.

Hanford junior Jake Knox may be the Falcons' No. 1 when it comes to singles competition, but he's the fifth in the Knox family to strike a commanding presence on the tennis courts.

The road to state kicks off in earnest this weekend with district and subdistrict tournaments throughout the region.

SPOKANE -- Richland players won five of the 10 division titles as the Bombers rolled to the Inland Empire championship with 149 points in Spokane.

The Inland Empire tournament in Spokane this weekend is prompting area coaches to talk up the virtues of their rosters and the overall pride they have in being part of the CBL 3A this season.

MOSES LAKE -- Wenatchee won 13 of 14 matches in its boys/girls sweep of Moses Lake.

WALLA WALLA -- Kamiakin's Caitlin Bampton did not lose a game in her match at No. 1 singles, but Walla Walla won the team match 4-3.

Trent Erikson edged Calvin Fox in three sets, including a tiebreak, as Columbia-Burbank's boys defeated visiting Connell 3-2.

Richland will be in good hands next week while coach Michelle Martin puts her best foot forward at the 112th Boston Marathon on April 21.

BENTON CITY -- Calvin Fox of Connell defeated Ki-Be's Mike Kearns in straight sets as the Connell boys and girls each pulled of 5-0 team victories.

Columbia-Burbank No. 1 Becky Magana beat two different opponents as the Coyotes boys and girls each notched two team victories over visiting Kiona-Benton.

Brittney Reed, Caitlin Bampton and Demie Warner of Kamiakin swept the girls singles championship brackets as the Braves finished second overall with 162 team points at the 28th Annual Tri-City Invite tennis tournament Saturday afternoon.

Richland's No. 1 boys doubles team Elliott Martin and Taylor Dickey beat their Central Valley counterparts 6-0, 6-0 and Kamiakin sophomore Josh Thornton won his No. 1 singles match in the first round of the 28th Annual Tri-City Invite.

SUNNYSIDE -- Richland's boys dropped just five games in seven matches for a 7-0 victory over Sunnyside.

WALLA WALLA -- Abe Chang won the only match for Davis as Walla Walla rolled to a 6-1 team victory.
