TACOMA -- The Walla Walla softball team capped the second day of its 4A state tournament by winning three games, including a 4-1 victory over Auburn-Riverside in the third-fourth place game to secure the first state softball trophy in school history.

There were a few surprises coming out of the Columbia Basin Big Nine 4A district tournament, most notably Southridge -- the Columbia Division co-champ -- going 0-2 to end its season.

GRANDVIEW -- Doris Lupercio collected three hits and drove in three runs to help Grandview hold on to defeat visiting Ephrata 7-6 and advance to the Central Washington Athletic Conference district tournament.

RICHLAND -- Alexis Bobadilla allowed only three hits and Tarynn Fortune hit a grand slam to lead Walla Walla to its first district softball title since 1999, routing Kennewick 12-0 in the CBBN 4A championship game Saturday at Columbia Playfield.

QUINCY -- Prosser's Kenzie Koch collected six hits and plated nine runs as Prosser swept Quincy 21-6 and 20-2 in a Central Washington Athletic Conference doubleheader played Thursday.

With the Richland softball team facing a tall order in its CBBN district opener at Southridge on Thursday, the shortest kid on the field came up the biggest for the Bombers.

After losing six all-league players to graduation from Othello's 2008 2A state championship team, the Huskies could have been forgiven for falling back into the middle of the CWAC pack in 2009.

The 4A district tournament begins today with four first-round games, each beginning at 5 p.m.

BURBANK -- Nicole Roberts and Kristyn Long each tossed one-hitters for Burbank, which defeated visiting Granger 22-0 and 12-1 in a nonleague doubleheader sweep.

DAYTON -- Nicole Brown and Stephanie Samuels limited Dayton to five hits over 14 innings as visiting Touchet swept a Blue Mountain 2B/1B doubleheader Monday by scores of 8-2 and 8-3.

YAKIMA -- Hannah Garza recovered from a shaky first inning, and Hanford's offense erased a 3-0 deficit to beat West Valley 5-4 in the semifinals of the CBBN 3A district tournament.

It can be easy to dismiss Connell as just senior pitcher Debbie Molsbarger and a bunch of eaglets.

PASCO -- Courtney Hancock drove in Allyx Copeland with a two-out single in the top of the seventh inning to lift Southridge to a sweep of Pasco at the TRAC complex, clinching a share of the CBBN Columbia title and the No. 1 district seed with a 2-1 win in Game 2.

GRANDVIEW -- Grandview's offense and pitchers Chris Mendoza and Van Tress made quick work in a pair of shortened games as the Greyhounds (6-8) swept winless Wapato 11-1 and 13-0.

WALLA WALLA -- Kamiakin scored an unearned run in the top of the 10th inning, and Lindsey Kamphius shut down Walla Walla in the bottom half as the Braves earned a split of the Columbia Basin Big Nine Cascade Division doubleheader with a 3-2 victory.

KENNEWICK -- The way the tiebreakers shaped up for Game 2 of Friday's Columbia Basin Big Nine's Columbia Division softball doubleheader between crosstown rivals Kennewick and Southridge, the Suns had more to lose.

OTHELLO -- Eden Garza twirled a Game 1 no-hitter as Othello improved to 13-1, just a half-game behind conference-leading Selah, with a doubleheader sweep over visiting Ephrata (5-8).

You don't have to look hard to find Division-I prospects in the Mid-Columbia. There's enough solid pitching, great hitting and good defense to boost college rosters around the Pacific Northwest.

RICHLAND -- Lindsey Kamphius and Katie Martell scattered seven hits between them, with each collecting a complete-game win in Kamiakin's Columbia Basin Big Nine Cascade sweep of Richland at Columbia Playfield.

MOXEE -- Eden Garza's three-hit 11-0 shutout led Othello (11-1) to a doubleheader sweep at East Valley (8-2) in Central Washington Athletic Conference play.
