Soccer: Prosser, Connell in state semifinals

PROSSER -- Senior Mynor Maza scored twice in the first half -- in the first minute on an assist by Alex Cortez and in the 28th with help from Alberto Quinones -- and Prosser shut out Medical Lake 2-0 in a Class 2A boys soccer quarterfinal matchup Saturday to earn the Mustangs their first-ever trip to the state semifinals.

"Our defense played really well," Prosser coach Rich Zoller said. "And they didn't put a lot of pressure on our goal."

Prosser will play its semifinal matchup versus Cheney at 8 p.m. Friday at Sunset Chevrolet Stadium in Sumner.

Class 1A quarterfinals: Connell 6, Wahluke 0

CONNELL -- Connell's Heriberto Mendoza made five saves to record a shutout over Wahluke in a Class 1A quarterfinal.

The Eagles will now play Brewster -- who handed Manson an 8-1 defeat -- in a semifinal matchup 4 p.m. Friday in Sumner.

Jonathan Rodriguez and Julio Ramirez each scored twice -- Rodriguez in the fifth minute on an assist from Freddy Barragan, and in the 76th with help from Ivan Barrigan.

Ramirez scored unassisted in the 45th minute and in the 62nd minute on Freddy Barragan's second assist of the match.

The Warriors end their season at 17-4 overall.
