SPOKANE -- Brian Galvan converted a penalty kick in the third minute of the second overtime to lift Sunnyside to a 1-0 victory over East Valley in the 3A Eastern Regional semifinals at Albi Stadium.
The Grizzlies (12-6) qualified for state for the third straight season. They travel to West Valley on Saturday for the regional final that also will serve as a first-round state playoff game.
Sunnyside sophomore Alfredo Gomez earned the penalty kick by being taken down in the box on a one-on-one opportunity.
"We controlled the play much of the game," said Grizzlies coach Juan Pineda. "It was a physical game with championship intensity."
Scoring--1, S, Brian Galvan (PK), 88:00. Shots--S 12, EV 5. Saves--S, Joaquin Perez 3. EV, Mason Smith 8.
NOTES: Richland hired Sara Elfering to take over its girls program from Chris Smith, who resigned last month.
Elfering, the wife of Southridge boys coach Chip Elfering, was an assistant for the Bombers from 2003-07 before taking a year off for personal reasons. This is her first head coaching job.
"It should be a fairly smooth transition (because of) her familiarity with the program," said Richland athletic director Mike Edwards.
