Who can blame the Kamiakin boys soccer team for wanting to play somebody outside of the Columbia Basin 3A League this year?
The Braves had lost four of their last six CBL contests and were ready to take on a new challenge.
Kamiakin got its wish Friday in the Eastern Regional tournament at Lampson Stadium, facing Mount Spokane -- the No. 2 seed out of the Greater Spokane League -- and the Braves responded with a 3-1 victory, eliminating the Wildcats.
Gavin Richter scored two second-half goals as Kamiakin earned a rematch with CBL champ Sunnyside at 6 p.m. Wednes-day, with the winner qualifying for state. The Braves split the season series against the Grizzlies, winning 4-3 at home and losing 3-0 on the road.
"This is the most passion we've shown all year. All year I've felt we haven't had enough," said Kamiakin coach Todd Borak. "They had a penalty kick (goal), but for the most part, we controlled the game."
The teams left the field at halftime tied at 1, but Braves forward Curtis Moore drew a foul in the Mount Spokane penalty box, earning a penalty kick. Richter converted the kick for a 2-1 lead just two minutes into the second half.
Richter scored a second goal 12 minutes later, sending a low roller across the box from the right flank, beating goalkeeper Jon Carter for a 3-1 lead.
Moore scored the Braves' first-half goal but will miss the regional semifinals after he and Mt. Spokane's Colin Schafer were red-carded for a minor fracas in the game's final minutes.
