Some quick hits from Thursday night's basketball action:
Congratulations to the Moses Lake girls for claiming their first-ever outright league title with a 43-23 victory over Pasco. The Chiefs won their first title last year but had to share it with the Bulldogs. This one is all their own.
"It was exciting," said ML coach Matt Strophy. "The Tribe was the loudest I've ever heard it."
Then in the third quarter, with Pasco still concentrating on shutting down 6-foot-4 post Carly Noyes, the Chiefs hit three 3-pointers -- Lorin Montgomery started the outburst, and Jordan Loera hit a pair during a 15-4 run that gave them a 35-19 lead.
"Teams have been focusing on Carly, and Pasco might do the best job of it," Strophy said. "But other players stepped up like they've done all season."
Don't be surprised if these two meet next Saturday, again in Moses Lake, this time with the district title on the line.
Bad news for Wenatchee fans; Star player Austin Bryan figures to be out two weeks after undergoing an emergency appendectomy early Wednesday morning.
Without him, though, the Panthers still managed to win at Eisenhower 66-60 to clinch a share of the CBL 4A boys title and the No. 1 district seed. Walla Walla can tie Wenatchee for the championship, but Wenatchee wins the points tiebreaker.
The return of Kam Douglass from a concussion and Carter Shae from a toe injury had a lot to do with Wenatchee's win Thursday night. Douglass led the Panthers with 17 points, while Shae handled the point as Wenatchee rallied from a 48-44 deficit after three quarters.
The SCAC East boys playoff race comes down to tonight's makeup game between Columbia (Burbank) and Wahluke, rescheduled from Thursday after high winds made the trek to Mattawa too dangerous.
If Burbank wins, Wahluke is out and Royal gets the final berth. If the Warriors win, they play Royal at 6 p.m. Saturday in Warden in a tiebreaker. That winner travels to Goldendale on Monday in a district crossover qualifier. That's a lot of traveling to do.
The SCAC East girls race cleaned up nicely. River View claimed a spot in the main district bracket with a 59-43 win at Warden, whil! e Kiona-Benton earned a home crossover game with a 63-55 win at Royal.
-- OK, these last two don't qualify as basketball items. First, saw that Eastmont's Nick Gale signed with Portland State in football. He'll play defensive end for the Vikings -- but not before trying to win a state title in wrestling.
Finally, Ellensburg announced the hiring of Josey Luft as its new volleyball coach. Luft was an all-state player for the Bulldogs in 2003 and 2004.
Til next time ...
