Kamiakin wins spot in regional baseball final

By Kevin Anthony, Herald staff writer

If a baseball game was scored on guts, Kamiakin and Southridge might still be playing at Southridge High.

Instead, the Braves' Jason Jones one-upped Suns starter Jay Fox in Kamiakin's 2-1 win Tuesday in the 3A Eastern Regional semifinals.

"I don't know how you can get any better than that," Suns coach Tim Sanders summed up, a sentiment also held by Kamiakin coach Rex Easley.

Jones threw 6 1/3 innings of two-hit ball before running into control troubles in the seventh. Maxx Garrett came in with the bases loaded and, after hitting one batter, shut the door.

The win secures a second straight trip to the state tournament for Kamiakin after a seven-year absence. The Braves play Kennewick, a 4-2 winner on the road against Mount Spokane, at 4 p.m. Saturday at Roy Johnson Field in the regional final.

Jones said locking up a state berth is nice, but "there's a lot of baseball left. It's a long way to Safeco."

Southridge, which won the CBL 3A regular-season title, plays host to Hanford in a loser-out game, but the time and date have to be determined with the school holding the district track meet Friday.

Fox gutted through a 35-pitch second inning, which started with a double by Garrett down the right-field line and ended with a strikeout of Jones -- Kamiakin's No. 2 hitter with a .407 average -- with the bases loaded to keep the damage to a single run.

The Southridge starter settled down with a six-pitch, 1-2-3 third. Kamiakin's other run came in the fifth on a pair of singles by Jason Gardner and Jones and a balk.

"He did a nice job," Sanders said. "He held his composure."

The Southridge hitters could do little to shake Jones, who allowed only three baserunners heading into the final inning. The only one that got past first came on a dropped flyball.

"Everything was just popping, every pitch -- my changeup, my two-seem -- everything really felt good," Jones said.

The closest he came to trouble before the seventh was in the sixth on the dropped fly. With a runner on second and one out, Southridge had its most dangerous hitters up in Andrew Mendenhall and Fox.

Both were first-pitch swinging -- Mendenhall grounding slowly to short and Fox lining out to second.

"You've got to be ready in those situations to hit your pitch," Sanders said. "I think a couple times we hit his pitch."

Jones had too much linebacker in him to admit getting tired when he walked the bases loaded in the seventh. Garrett came in and struck out the first batter, hit the next to force in a run, then got No. 2 hitter Thomas Henderson to fly out to center.
