'My Winnipeg' an unusual documentary

Winnipeg — according to My Winnipeg — is the heart of the heart of the continent.
Done more like an MTV music video, this documentary mixes local Winnipeg, Manitoba, lore and history with a view of director Guy Maddin’s childhood. Integrating historical footage with modern shots, Maddin explains the city’s story, his family’s and his own in wintry black and white.
George Toles repetitive and over-the-top dialogue is as grinding as Maddin’s icy view of his hometown. It is so effective that even in a warm room you’ll want to bundle up.
My Winnipeg takes a few minutes to get used to but once you’re into the story this is a fascinating and original documentary.
Mr. Movie rating: 5 stars
Unrated, probably R for nudity. It plays 8 p.m. Friday, March 6 at the Battelle Auditorium.
5 stars to 4 1/2 stars: Must see on the big screen
4 stars to 3 1/2 stars: Good film, see it if it's your type of movie.
3 stars to 2 1/2 stars: Wait until it comes out on video.
