Olympic flame hits highest peak

The Olympic torch relay made its way up Mount Everest, as the flame reached the world's highest peak on Thursday.

A group of 19 mountaineers made the final assault up the mountain, carrying the torch from base camp at 27,390 feet to the summit at 29,035 feet in just over seven hours.

The Olympic flame was kept in a specially-designed metal canister during the ascent. Tsering Wangmo, an ethnic Tibetan and one of the two female climbers on the final team, carried the torch to the peak.

The torch relay began in March and was met with numerous disruptions during its international route, stemming from protests over China's human rights record.
