Rangers 8, Mariners 5
Seattle pitchers were roughed up for 18 hits as Texas overcame a 4-2, first-inning deficit to beat Seattle at a packed Peoria Stadium.
Seattle starter Ryan Feierabend pitched four innings, allowing eight hits and three runs, and took a nasty line drive off the inside of his knee.
The Mariners put up a four-run first inning highlighted by an RBI double from Adrian Beltre and RBI singles by Greg Norton and Mike Morse.
But the lead didn’t stand as Texas scored four on five hits off reliever Jake Woods to take a 7-4 lead in the fifth. Seattle cut into the lead on another RBI single by Morse to make it 7-5, but a misjudged pop-up by Miguel Cairo led to a run off Chris Reitsma in the seventh.
Woods (1-1) took the loss for the Mariners, and Eric Hurley (2-1) got the win.
Morse and Jose Lopez each had three hits to lead the Mariners, and Norton added two hits.
Notable
• Morse celebrated his 26th birthday by going 3-for-4 with two RBI and pushing his spring average to .542. More importantly, he made all the plays in right field and looked markedly better than his last time at the position.
• Feierabend, on the drive off his knee: “I saw the ball right off the bat but I just couldn’t get out the way, it was hit so hard. The first thing I thought of was, ‘Where’s the ball?’ But when I took that first step, it was, ‘Oh, this hurts so bad.’ ”
To his credit, Feierabend stayed in the game and struck out the next batter to end the inning. He pitched another scoreless inning before ending his day with a large ice bag wrapped around his leg.
“I was just being competitive,” he said. “I’m here to compete for a job. I don’t have a spot up here. If I could pitch, I wanted to try and pitch.”
• Former Washington State standout Mike Kinkade got his first action with the Mariners this spring, catching the ninth inning but failing to register an at-bat. Kinkade was signed to a minor league contract early in the spring.
• Instead of pitching against the American League West rival Los Angeles Angels today, Carlos Silva and Brandon Morrow will pitch in a minor league game at 10:30 a.m. It will be Morrow’s first action since being shut down with a tired arm over a week ago.
• The Mariners said there are still seats available for opening day March 31 against the Rangers at Safeco Field. Plenty of seats remain for the rest of the opening series as well.
