Two years ago, John Pierce was working odd jobs just to pay the bills in Texas.
Tonight, he is making his first start in three seasons for any football team.
Pierce, who came into camp as the second-string quarterback, won the starting job over Ryan Porter for the Fever's home opener against the Stockton Lightning at Toyota Center.
Is Pierce nervous about tonight?
"I was more nervous during practice," he said. "Coaches can just sit there and watch everything you do."
Pierce, who was on the Fever's practice squad last season, beat out Porter after a pair of solid showings in Tri-Cities' two preseason games.
That prompted the Fever to trade Porter to Green Bay, a place he originally thought he would play this year, and traded with Boise for Jason Campbell, who played with coach Cedric Walker in Everett a year ago.
-- J.R. Thomas, the Fever's leading receiver last season, is listed on the top of the team's depth chart for tonight's game.
He missed both preseason games with an ankle injury.
